Title
sherd (exterior)
Description
English: Pottery rim sherd made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. There is a deep groove on the upper surface of the rim within an external everted rib. Below the rim are some small impressions but a pattern is not obvious. This sort of stepped rim corresponds to those on other Grooved Ware vessels, particularly of the Clacton style (Manby, 1999, 61). The fabric has inclusions of pale felspars, dark augite and mica and is mid-brown on the exterior and orangey-brown on the interior of the sherd. This 'mucky' gabbroic fabric and type of decoration is seen on Grooved Ware vessels, dating from c.2900-2400 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming).

T.G. Manby in Cleal & MacSween (1999) illustrates similar rims of Grooved Ware vessels from Garton Slack in Yorkshire, on page 63, Fig.6.3, Nos.2-3.
