One of numerous Hindu temple ruins in Telangana

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Khammampalli, sometimes spelled as Khammampalle or Khammampally, is a village in Telangana with historic temple ruins. The temple is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the historic group of temples and their ruins at Manthani and to the west of Thadicharla in Telangana (not to be confused with the location with the same name in Andhra Pradesh and about 350 kilometers away).
  • This is a major Shiva temple, now in ruins on the western banks of river Manair (Maneru, Maner), a tributary of river Godavari.
  • The temple originally stood on a molded jagati, had three entrances, a shared maha mandapa, antaralas and garbhagriyas. Parts of the temple are intricately carved and have frames for large statues, but most of these statues are now missing. The surviving artwork – largely of the Shaiva Hindu tradition – in the covered section of the temple are beheaded or defaced, with their faces and limbs chopped or gouged out. Outside, the artwork show signs of natural erosion as well as vandalism. The damage is unlikely from an earthquake or from other natural causes, more likely from intentional act of destruction and being torn down because the sections and pieces of the temple are unnaturally broken and scattered over significant distances out of order.
  • Like the ruins of the Manthani group of temples, many parts of this temple are found far from the temple. Further, natural vegetation and trees have grown over the decades into the temple ruins and premises as a result of negligence and historic nature of the temple.
  • Inscriptions have been found among these temple ruins. These do not state when the temple was built, but they announce gifts to this temple in the 12th and 13th century. This confirms that this temple was in existence by the 12th-century.
  • The local villagers have attempted to restore and resume worship in this temple. One of the sanctums with a towering Shiva lingam has become active location for worship. The regional Hindus consider these ruins as one of their pilgrimage site on major festivals such as Shivaratri.
