Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built circa 1831 and renovated several times, the Rabbit Hash general store was, in the late 19th Century, likely owned by the Carlton family, and later by D. Wilson. The wood-frame building features a gabled roof concealed by a “false front” parapet in the center that has a large painted sign on it reading “Rabbit Hash General Store,” with a historic Coca Cola painted advertisement below, a front porch partially covered by a shed awning, and an open wooden pier foundation. The store’s interior features a still-working cast iron potbelly woodstove that heats the building, with decorative items and artifacts of the type that would have been sold at the store and those like it historically, as well as a selection of candy, beverages, and other goods. The store is a major attraction in the area and draws a lot of visitors from the surrounding region, and is considered by many to be one of the best-preserved historic country stores in the United States. The store suffered a devastating fire in 2016 that destroyed most of the building, leaving only the front walls and foundation, but was rebuilt faithfully to its original design, and reopened in 2017. The store was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, and is a contributing structure in the Rabbit Hash Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
