Description (a) STM image of second-layer √3 × √3-α silicene. Vs = +1.0 V and I = 0.3 nA. The image size is 18 × 18 nm. (θSi = 0.84 ML on 15 ML thick Ag film.) The black arrows indicate the Ag[1bar 10] direction. (b) dI/dV map of the same area in (a). Vs = +1.0 V and I = 0.3 nA. The image size is 18 × 18 nm. (c) dI/dV map of the same area in (a). Vs = +0.8 V and I = 0.3 nA. All the STM and dI/dV images were acquired at liquid nitrogen temperature. (d) Structural model of Moiré pattern on second-layer √3 silicene. The red and blue mesh represent the second layer √3 × √3 (with respect to the silicene 1 × 1 lattice) and the first layer √7 × √7 (with respect to the Ag(111) 1 × 1 lattice) silicene lattices, respectively. The √3 × √3 lattice is overlaid so as to be commensurate with the √7 × √7 lattice. The first-layer √7 × √7 silicene becomes commensurate with the second layer √3 × √3 silicene with a 2 × 2 periodicity (with respect to the silicene √3 × √3 lattice) as indicated by the black rhombus. The black arrows indicate the Ag[1-10] direction.
