Summary

[edit]
Description Introduced, cool season, annual herb up to 2.5 m tall. Leaves form a; rosette when plant is young. Leaves Leaves are variegated and spiny. Heads are large, solitary and terminal, with spiny bracts and purple tubular florets. Flowering is in spring. A native of S Eur. & N Afr, it is a weed of cultivation, pastures, roadsides and disturbed habitats; particularly common on volcanic, alluvial or other fertile soils and areas with a high nitrogen status such as stock camps. Competitive with pastures and crops; can form impenetrable thickets. Spray grazing is not recommended; plant can have a high nitrate content and wilted plants may cause livestock deaths if eaten. Spread by seed; paddock hygiene can help prevent spread by humans, livestock and vehicles. Isolated plants can be chipped; take care with possible nitrate poisoning as wilted plants readily eaten by livestock. Cultivation can be used as a first action if re-sowing to pasture; strong, competitive well managed, perennial pastures is the long-term solution.
