Description

De St. Christoffel kathedraal is de hoofdkerk van het bisdom Roermond. In 1410 werd met de bouw van een laatgotische kruiskerk begonnen als parochiekerk ter vervanging van een oudere kerk buiten de stad. Later in de vijftiende eeuw werd al overgegaan tot vergaande verbouwing van de kerk. Het koor werd tot hallenkoor uitgebouwd, het schip werd verbreed van drie naar vijf beuken. De kerk had zwaar te lijden onder oorlogsschade tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De toren werd één dag voor de bevrijding opgeblazen door de Duitsers en na de oorlog in gewijzigde vorm herbouwd. Op 13 april 1992 zorgde de aardbeving bij Roermond voor aanzienlijke schade.
