Summary[edit]

Description

This is Sunday 18th June 1911 and Colonial Troops are setting out from the Duke of York's Military School in the King's Road, Chelsea on an epic march to St. Paul's Cathedral for church parade. The Colonial troops are in London for the Coronation of King George V and I bet they wish they were billeted closer to the Cathedral. They are passing through Sloane Square and Peter Jones Department store is top centre. A Police officer is holding up traffic whilst the 1,500 troops traverse the square. Here is a report from The Times the following day. COLONIAL TROOPS AT CHURCH. ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL.

A body of 1,500 Colonial troops attended service at St. Paul's Cathedral yesterday morning. Accompanied by the band of the Grenadier Guards, they marched to the Cathedral from Kensington and the Duke of York's School by way of the Embankment and Ludgate hill. Crowds had assembled at various points along the line of route to witness their passing, and in the neighbourhood of the Cathedral the sightseers were so densely massed as to impede the progress of the troops. Special places had been reserved for the Colonial visitors in the transepts and under the dome. As soon as they had taken their seats the general public were admitted, but thousands were unable to enter. The sermon was preached by the Dean of Gloucester, who said that when the crown of a thousand years was placed on the brows of King George they might pray with intense fervour that the spirit of those two great makers of England -Victoria and Edward - might rest and abide on that young and honoured head, that the bonds which bound the almighty Anglo-Saxon people across the sea to England might become stronger and that his reign of peace and prosperity might be blessed.
