Summary

[edit]
Description

Slottsfjellet (Castle Mountain) seen from the Frodeåsen hill north of Tønsberg.

This small mountain, only 63 meters tall today (but a bit higher in medieval times because of lower sea levels) has played an important role in the towns and the nations history. Long before the current tower was erected (in 1888) there was a castle here, Tunsberghus, that housed both chieftans and kings. This is where the Bagler clan was under siege by the Birkebeiner clan in the 12th century and where king Magnus Lagabøte ("Magnus the Law Improver") wrote down his laws in the 13th.
