I finally found some aquatic springtails in Australia! These photos were taken on the edge of a rancid little pool of water in the middle of some regenerating bush in the Uriarra state forest near Canberra. They were everywhere but right by the water so it was a little tricky getting any decent shots. My flash diffuser was half under water so I was swearing quite a lot too....
Now, this adult Sminthurides female in the main photo could be S. schoetti, Frans' sp.2 or something else entirely. I have no idea! There's a four segmented ant4. there's a distinctive dorsal striping on the adult females and the colours are kind of nice. that's pretty much it!
