Summary[edit]

Description
English: As a fire-filled summer continued to sear Greece, smoke continued to pour across the Mediterranean Sea in late August 2023.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of a cloud of thick smoke blowing westward from Greece on August 24. This smoke traveled hundreds of miles, passing over the island of Sicily, southern Italy, and Malta. It even appeared to reach Tunisia and Libya.

On August 24, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) reported, through the website ReliefWeb, that a total of 99 forest fires were burning across Greece, including 55 fires occurring in the last 24 hours. The most affected areas being Alexandroupolis, Dadia and Rodopi Municipalities in East Macedonia, Fyli Municipality in north-eastern Attica (Central Greece), Viotia (Central Greece), and Evia Island. The area burned so far is reported at 73,365 hectares, the largest in Europe since records started in 2000.

Hot, dry weather is expected to continue across Greece in the near future. The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) grades the fire danger forecast as high to extreme across Greece for the next 48 hours.
