Description
English: The first days of 2018 brought heavy snow to sections of northern and eastern China. According to a news story carried on XinhuaNet on January 8, heavy snow was causing havoc in parts of China and was predicted to continue for an additional day or more. Nineteen expressways in northeast China’s Liaoning province were closed or restricted, while central China’s Henan Province reported the worst snow since local records began in 1951, leaving one dead and three injured. This province also lost over 2,000 hectares of crops, causing an estimated losses of 219 million yuan (33.8 million US dollars). In Anhui Province, heavy snow was reported to have affected 1.5 million people with crop losses of over 160,000 hectares and total estimated economic losses of 3.5 billion yuan. The article also reported that one person was killed in Hubei Province and caused 748 people to relocate. That province has lost more than 1 billion yuan with more than 349 houses damaged along with 51,000 hectares of crops. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of snow across eastern China. The snow lies most heavily on Henan and Hubei provinces in the far eastern part of the image. The star-shaped gray pixels are created by human activity. The central circles are cities while the “rays” that radiate outward from the circular centers are highways and roads which connect cities.
