Summary
[edit]| Description |
English: Solar eclipses occur when the orbiting Moon is directly between the Sun and Earth - this casts a large shadow on the planet. An Earth-Moon-Sun alignment occurs once a month and causes a spring tide in the oceans (= extra-high high tide). Two spring tides occur each month - the other occurs during a Moon-Earth-Sun alignment (the Moon is on the opposite side of Earth, compared with the Sun). Few Earth-Moon-Sun alignments result in an eclipse, but eclipses are not rare. However, eclipses rarely occur at any given locality.
These photos were taken in the mid-afternoon, local time, in Newark, Ohio on 8 April 2024. At this locality, the eclipse was about 99%. |
