DescriptionSphere eversion topological event D1.webm |
English: In a sphere eversion, certain topological events occur. These topological events describe changes in the topology of the self-intersection curves of the sphere during the eversion. The topological event D1 describes a change in the topology of the connectivity of the self-intersection curves between two different parts of the deformed sphere. The D1 event starts with two disjoint self-intersection curves (or two disjoint parts of a single self-intersection curve) that connect points in a horizontal direction. Moving the two parts of the sphere past each other causes self-intersection curves to go through a configuration that resembles an X. Moving the parts of the sphere further causes the self-intersection curves to connect points in the vertical direction. Therefore, the D1 events causes a change in which parts of the self-intersection curves are connected to which other parts. A D1 occurs, for example, if a single closed intersection curve splits into two disjoint closed intersection curves or, vice versa, if two closed intersection curves merge into a single intersection curve.
In the video, the two different parts of the deformed sphere are visualized by topological disks, one of which has the shape of an hyperbolic paraboloid and the other one has the shape of a plane. The video shows the hyperbolic paraboloid and the plane moving past each other. In the first part of the video, the plane moves upward and the hyperbolic paraboloid downward. In the beginning, the self-intersection curves are connected horizontally. At the point where the plane reaches the saddle point of the hyperbolic paraboloid, the self-intersection curves form an X. After that, the self-intersection curves are connected vertically. The direction of movement of the plane and hyperbolic paraboloid reverse in the second part of the video, which reverses the topological change. The entire sequence is repeated a second time in the video. The two different parts of the sphere are displayed as transparent surfaces in magenta and cyan. To emphasize the self-intersection curves, they are displayed as a white tubes. The D1 event can also be imagined as the water level (the cyan plane in the video) rising at an isthmus. The rising water level disconnects the isthmus into two separate landmasses. Therefore, this topological event is also called an isthmus event. The terminology D1 for this topological event is described in the following articles:
