Summary
[edit]DescriptionSpinning binary black holes merging.webm |
English: Simulation of the inspiral and merger of a binary black hole with mass ratio 3 and randomly oriented initial spins. The holes are colored by their scalar curvature--even though the black holes appear to be pretty much spherical, their intrinsic curvature varies across their surface.
The trajectories of the holes are traced out to show the precession of the orbital plane, which occurs as a result of the spins being unaligned with the orbital angular momentum. The spin arrows have lengths and colors proportional to their magnitude, and the precession of the individual spins during the inspiral can also be seen. The simulation and rendering were performed at Caltech by Nick Taylor, a member of the SXS collaboration (http://www.black-holes.org), using the SpEC code (http://www.black-holes.org/SpEC/) and the open-source visualization application ParaView (http://www.paraview.org/). |
