Summary

Description
English: A swift and intense late-season snowstorm raced across the midwestern United States in the first days of spring, 2018, leaving a band of thick snow across several states. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the aftermath of the storm on March 25.

According to the Weather Channel, the two-day storm spread a swath of heavy, wet snow from the Dakotas to the Ohio Valley and the southern Appalachians from March 23-24. Reports of near-blizzard conditions occurred in several locations, including Woodford and Peoria counties in Illinois, while reports of thundersnow were more widespread, including parts of Iowa and Kentucky. The highest snow totals were reported from Mason City, Iowa which registered 17.5 inches (44.5 cm), while more than a foot (30.5 cm) fell in parts of Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.

A near-record daytime snowfall for the month of March laid 10.2 inches (25.9 cm) of fresh snow in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Indy Star called the system “one of the latest and most severe winter storms on record”. While Indianapolis was in the center of the storm, the width of the intense snow band in parts of Indiana was only about 15 miles (24 km) wide, leaving nearby towns chilly but nearly snow-free. The previous record for March snowfall in Indianapolis was 12.1 inches (30.7 cm) which fell on March 19, 1906. Indianapolis sits near the center of this image.
