Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt-John's Church Belize, 1825.jpg |
English: 1825 engraving showing St. John's the Baptist Church of Belize, British Honduras. The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1812 and work was completed in 1820. The church was built by slave labour using bricks used as ballast aboard ships. It was first described as an Episcopalian church at its inception but with the arrival of the new rector Dr. Matthew Newport in 1824, it became strictly Anglican. In 1825 and 1845, two kings of the Mosquito Coast were to be crowned in St. John's by the Rev. Newport. British Honduras was constituted as a diocese in 1883 and St. John's became St. John's Cathedral n 1891.(http://www.belizechurchassociation.org.uk/#/belize-cathedral-200-years/4565495817). |
