Summary

[edit]
Description
English: St Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, located at 10 Huntington Street between State and Washington Streets in New London, Connecticut, was built in 1866-1876 and was designed in the Gothic Revival style by Patrick Keely of New York. The tower was added in 1911.

The parish began in the 1840s in a storefront, from which it served Irish workers. St. John's was organized and a chapel built on Jay Street. A larger church, St. Patrick's was built on Truman Street in 1855. The plot of land in current use was acquired in 1866 and work began on a new church. In 1874 the parish was renamed St. Mary Star of the Sea. In 2017, St. Mary Star of the Sea, Our Lady of Grace on Fishers Island, New York St. Joseph Church in New London, and St. Paul Church in Waterford, Connecticut joined together to form the Catholic community of St. Brendan the Navigator.
