DescriptionSt Martin's church Fornham St Martin Suffolk (265201081).jpg | St Martin's church Fornham St Martin Suffolk, mural monument to Sir William Gilstrap, 1st Baronet (1816–1896) of Fornham Park, Bury St. Edmund's, Suffolk, and of Newark-on-Trent, Notts, a prominent maltster and philanthropist, and his wife Elizabeth Haigh (1822-1891), who was authoress of The Harp of Colne (1894), a book of poetry. Text from 1894 edition: "Lady Gilstrap, the Authoress of these Poems, was born at Colne Bridge House, Huddersfield, on September 23rd, 1822, the fourth daughter of THOMAS HAIGH, Esq., and was married, June 2nd, 1847, to MR., now SIR, WILLIAM GILSTRAP, Bart., of Fornham Park, Bury St. Edmund's, Suffolk, and of Newark-on-Trent, Notts. On September 12th, 1891, the amiable Authoress passed away, mourned by all who knew her." Arms: Argent, a chevron engrailed vert between in chief two escutcheons gules each charged with a galtrap of the field and in base a talbot's head erased of the third (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.401) impaling: Azure, a saltire between in chief a .... in dexter fess a decrescent in sinister fess an increscent in base a ..... argent (Haigh) (Burke, 1884, pp.439-40, various charges, stars and crescents in chief and base, not identifiable in this image). |
