A park ranger holding a flashlight on stalactites

Stalactites are formed when water drips from the ceiling of the cave. As it drips, calcite is slowly deposited on the rock. Over time it "grows" into the formation we all think of. Being a dry cave, Jewel Cave has only a few areas of stalactites.
