Description Stamp of the German Democratic Republic; 1984; commemorative stamp of the issue "Castles in the GDR – I"; issue of 4 stamps and 1 PSE ("PSE" = "Postal Stationery Envelope"); The depicted stamp is GDR Michel No. 2910 from 1984 and shows as motive a view to the "Burg Falkenstein" (Meant is the castle of the same name in the Harz-mountains (near Harzgerode, district of Hettstedt, country Saxony-Anhalt, so-called "Lower Harz", Saxony-Anhalt, Germany).; This castle was built between 1120 and 1180

as "hill castle" (German: "Höhenburg").; This stamp was postmarked with an one-circle first-day special cancellation with 35.0 mm diameter from 1085 Berlin, showing a view to the "Burg Ranis" as central motive (in Thuringia near Pößneck at the village Ranis, the oldest parts were built in the 12th century, the contemporary look goes mainly back to the 17th century as the castle was rebuilt in the style of the Saxonian Late Renaissance.).
