Description |
English: On verso of image: COTTAGE CITY leaving Sitka . The COTTAGE CITY was a wooden, single screw steamer built at Bath, Maine, in 1890 (p. 18). She was operated by the Pacific Coast Steamship company and had a distinctive whistle (p. 18, 34). She was overhauled in 1897 to provide gold rush service to Alaska beginning in 1898 (p. 34). She survived breaking a tail shaft in Alaskan waters in 1909 (p. 165), but was declared a total loss after she wrecked and grounded on some rocks during a heavy snowstorm on January 26, 1911 (p. 194, 195). Notes from Gordon Newell, ed., The H.W. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest (Seattle: Superior Publishing Co, 1966).
