Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Otto-Grotewohl-Platz, Plauen seen from outside the sport centre on the town hall side of the square. I think it is 4PM. The Platz is a hive of activity at this moment as trams from all the various routes arrived almost simultaneously before departing together to their various destinations, allowing interchange between all of them. The mainly red Gotha car on route 2 between lower and upper stations stands out among the modern Tatra KT4D units.

Otto Grotewohl was the first prime minister of the GDR from 1949 until his death in 1964. He was a Social Democrat in the Weimar Republic but dismissed and imprisoned under the Nazis several times. He led the DDR SDP into a merger with the Communist Party to form the SED. His name has been removed from streets eg. in Berlin (to become Mohrenstraße. (probably urged by descendents of those who weren't locked up in 1933) The triangle or Gleisdreieck in Plauen was opened on 2 January 1975 after construction was completed the previous month. Routes 1,2,3 4 and 5 thus met there. In 1976 the first two tatra KT4D cars, 201/2 entered service, followed by more in 1981. In 1983 two more routes were added, allowing seven to meet up here. Route 2 was converted to bus operation in 2007.The current tram network is here

This square is now known as Tunnel.
