William Hobson had planned for the signings of te Tiriti o Waitangi to take place on 7 February, but instead they took place on 6 February. This was lucky for Hobson, as 7 February was extremely wet – so torrential was the rain that no one could leave theHMS Herald. William Colenso did not think a hui could have been held in such conditions and, if it had been necessary to wait until 8 February to resume proceedings, many of the rangatira (chiefs) would have given up and returned home. This is a copy of the letter Hobson sent to George Gibbs after the hui of 5 and 6 February. It details Hobson’s view of the debates and signings, and comes from a bound register of correspondence to Gibbs, held in the Governor record group (archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewEntity.do?code=16591).
