Summary

Description
English: Glass plate negative of Sydney’s Circular Quay, 1910

1910 This image from a glass plate negative produced in 1910 is a view of Circular Quay's sandstone buildings and ferries on Sydney Cove. The ferry 'Kummulla' (1902-) is at the left. In the foreground at the left, is the ferry 'Wallaby' (1879-) on which a baby was born in 1905. At the right, the Parramatta River ferry 'Pheasant' is heading out for the one-hour run up the river to the Duck Creek steam tram terminal. Two ferries steam gently at the wharves. At the left is 'Vaucluse' (1905-), generally considered to be the fastest of the inner-harbour ferries of her time. Next to her the Manly ferry, 'Burra Bra' (1908-), is blowing off steam.

The area around The Quay is thriving and the buildings of various businesses can be seen: Pastoral Finance Assoc. Ltd, Dalgety & Company Ltd, Burns Philp and Co. Ltd, H.T. Stamp Skin Merchant, Oceanic Steam Ship Co. Ltd, Macquarie Bond, John Bridge & Co. wool brokers, Mort & Co. Ltd and for country visitors, the Hotel Metropole (1890-1969).
