Notes | Thomas Sheraton’s pattern book The Cabinet-Makers and Upholsterer’s Drawing Book (1791-1794) represents the last phase of the neo-classical style and the trend towards light and delicate furniture. At the same time a new ease of manners simplicity and spontaneity became fashionable. The Sheraton period marks the height of technical accomplishments for delicacy, strength and utility combined in furniture pieces. His style forms the transition between the Neo classical and the search for simplicity and restrained decoration reduced in this piece to the stringing (narrow band of inlay) This bow fronted sideboard, includes an arched centre (to assist serving meals) and has deeper drawers and the characteristic Sheraton type narrow tapered legs that have a delicate almost brittle appearance. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
