Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Traditional Matryoshka nesting doll, a symbol of motherhood and fertility, are a cultural icon in Russia.

Like many other emerging markets, Russia’s large population has adopted consumer technologies later than many developed economies. But in recent years, Russia -- like Brazil, India and China -- have been moving up the ranks, leapfrogging long-time PC market leaders such as the U.S., Japan and Germany.

“Consumers are driving the growing volume of sales in Russia,” Stefania Lorenz, a research director for IDC, said in an interview. “Between the first quarter of 2010 and the Q3 of 2011, consumer notebook sales grew from 76% to 84%,” she said. “And if you look at just the second quarter of 2011, of the 2.6 million PC units sold, 2.2 million of those were sold to consumers.”

Intel Free Press story: Russia's Middle Class Drives Thriving PC Market. Improved living standards, computer literacy and Internet access combined with a significant drop in prices, are making PCs attractive and accessible to more people.
