English: Tents at the waterfront after the Great Fire, July 1889 |

Description |
English: After the June 1889 fire leveled more than thirty blocks of Seattle's downtown area, energetic Seattleites quickly set up business in tents. For several months, most of the city's business activities were carried on from these temporary shelters. This photo was taken a month after the 1889 fire at the corner of Third Avenue and Jefferson Street, looking towards the waterfront. Tents have blossomed in the burned-out business district. By using a magnifying glass on the original photograph, one can see the Dexter Horton Bank, a harness shop, a hat shop, a loan office, a barber shop, four restaurants, and four saloons. Title on photo: Corner Third and Jefferson Street, Seattle, Wash., July 1889. Original photograph: Soule, John P., July 1889. Copied ca. 1912 by McManus.
