[edit]DescriptionThe Land and its Laws of Obligation.webm |
English: A briefing from Adjunct Associate Professor Mary Graham, a Kombu-merri person currently teaching with the University of Queensland's School of Political Science and International Studies in the realms of Aboriginal history, politics and comparative philosophy.
Mary provides valuable insights not just to the traditional Indigenous relationship between land and people, but a diverse civilisation literally built from the ground up across the continent. All Australian Indigenous cultures share a common foundation of prioritising “country” – a sacralised term used here with the greatest respect – in order to best care for its people. The health of the land and the ecosystems that support its plants and animals is embedded in a healthy human culture, not just as a spiritual practice, but also as a matter of pragmatism – it builds an efficient and ethical human society. The Law of Obligation is constructed from the premise that we come from the land, learn from the land and should look after the land as an essential act of reciprocity, and that all human social, legal and economic structures should flow from this foundational relationship. Produced for the Royal Societies of Australia 2021 Stewardship of Country symposium with the support of Inspiring Victoria and the Royal Society of Victoria. |
