Inscribed: "The loss of Her Majesty's Steam Frigate 'Avenger' commanded by Captain Chas G. E. Napier. On the sunken rocks of Sorelli at Ten o'Clock on the night of the twentieth of Decr 1847, while on her passage from Gibraltar to Malta. When all hands perished but the four following Survivors, Francis Rooke Lieut., John Larcom Gunner, W M Hill Capns Steward, James Morley Boy. This Picture is a faithful representation of the melancholy event, taken from a drawing by W M Hill, one of the survivors and published expressly for the benefit of himself and family".

Hand-coloured. Medium includes gum arabic.
