Description

Mikan, better know as oranges to the rest of the world, are the one thing that's great about Japan. No seriously, Japan's not that great of a country unless you like manga or anime or robots or cool technology or weird fringe fetishes that make most people nervous or history or samurai's or ninjas or nature or impressive vistas or excellent hiking trails or buddhism or beer or video games or peaceful living or culture, or art any of the other amazing things that Japan has to offer. Really there's nothing here but Mikan.

Luckily I live in the heart of Mikan country, come winter you can get about 500 oranges for a buck. But you don't even really have to buy them because if you live close enough to the countryside everyone you vaguely have some sort of connection to will hand you a bag full of them every week until you cankerous mouth begs for forgiveness for whatever crimes it thinks you are punishing it for.

This also brings me to one of the other wonders of Japan, the unmanned roadside fruit/veggie/whatever stand. Let me restate that for dramatic effect. Unmanned Fruit Stand. It rhymes. Feel free to put it on a t-shirt. The UFS is just what the name implies, a stand, usually full of Mikan, with no person in sight standing around, that just has a sign stating the price of the wares, and sometimes a little metal box to put the money in. The unmanned fruit stand can be seen all over the Japanese countryside, but you are most likely to encounter it alongside popular hiking trails. Mikan generally are the staple ware but I have seen assorted veggies on one and can imagine that the product ranges are limitless.
