Title
English: The Scandinavian Seamen's Home and Mission Hotel, ca. 1922
Description
English: Sometimes sailors found themselves in Seattle without a place to stay between voyages. Others were too old or too sick to continue work. In the 1920s, organizations which helped them included the Scandinavian Seaman's Home and the Mission Hotel, managed by Reverend E.B. Slettedahl.

This photo, taken in about 1922, shows the seamen's home and hotel building on Marion Street, convenient to the waterfront.

The two main buildings in this photo are the (James) Campbell Block, designed by Herman Steinman, on the left and the (Robert) Knipe Block on the right; both were completed in 1890. Note the giant anvil on the Campbell's roofline, likely a nod to his occupation prior to the great fire as a hardware and metals merchant (Wald & Campbell, 704 Front St). The Noyes Block AKA Rainier Grand Hotel is next on the right after the Knipe. This entire block would be demolished for the Federal building in 1930.
