Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Third Man (1949 American theatrical poster).jpg |
English: Theatrical poster for the American release of the 1949 film The Third Man. |
Date | |
Source |
English: Scan via Heritage Auctions. Cropped from the original image and lightly retouched to repair the torn upper-left corner. |
Author |
English: "Copyright 1949 Selznick Releasing Organization, Inc. Country of Origin U.S.A." |
Permission (Reusing this file) |
English: No permission is required. The poster included a valid copyright notice, as seen at bottom left. However, the copyright for the artwork was not renewed, as was required by American copyright law to extend/maintain protection for works published 1963 or earlier. In order to maintain copyright protection, the poster would have had to be renewed 28 years after publication, in either 1976 or 1977 (see the sections for "Artwork: Original registrations and renewals" and refer to the links to search the copyright catalogs for those years). Because it was not renewed, copyright lapsed for the poster after 1977. Note that the poster art is a distinct work from the film it represents and had to be renewed separately. |
Note on US/UK posters for this film InfoField | The Third Man is usually understood to be a British film or a British–American coproduction. This poster design was used for its US release. It was first published in the US and was published originally and primarily for the US market, probably exclusively so at the time of its original theatrical release. The poster for its UK release featured a completely different design, which can be seen via Heritage Auctions here, among other places. However, the UK poster is subject to UK copyright law and has not become free-license or public domain (as of the time of this upload). |
