Title
The back of a shoe or knee buckle, dating to the 17th/ 18th century AD.
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy sub-annular shoe or knee buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle (now missing), dating to the 17th/ 18th century AD (diameter: 32.7mm; thickness: 3.7mm; weight: 11.43g). The tinned two piece buckle is only decorated on the front with moulded oblique grooves that radiate outwards at a slant from a raised border running around the inner circle of the artefact. The back of the buckle is flat and undecorated. There is slight iron corrosion at the drilled frame where iron pin fragments still protrude outwards into the centre of the buckle frame. The artefact is slightly worn but in a good condition with a dark green patina.

A very similar example is illustrated in Whitehead’s ‘Buckles 1250-1800’, page 97, ref no 602.
