Description

The total eclipse of March 29, 2006. Seen from the deck of the Pan Orama from a spot on the centerline of the path of totality, at its closest approach to port at the Eastern tip of Rhodes. That point was somewhere out in the Mediterranean Sea, more than 100 nautical miles SE of the port.

Along with totality, a strong wind came up and the sea became much rougher. Even seated with my back to a mast I had trouble holding the camera steady for every shot. However, that did make for some pretty images that could be hard to duplicate...

The pink line is probably traced by a solar protuberance showing past the shadow cast by the moon.

D70s, 500 mm, 1/25 s, f/8, ISO 800. Lightly adjusted in Adobe Camera Raw.

For the 100 points crowd: I promised when I offered the plain orange dot up for sacrifice that I would be back with an eclipse shot. This and several others where the camera moved were by far the more interesting of the shots I brought home. If asked before I left, I would have said my goal was to get the pedestrian shots of totality you can see anywhere. Now, I find I am drawn to the shots that you couldn't easily reproduce without a ship at sea and the right conditions. Please feel free to browse the other shots from the trip in the obviously topical set and pool too.
