Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, Jardin botanique, 4101, rue Sherbrooke Est, Montréal, Québec, H1X 2B2 Description de l’œuvre : The First Jewel est une sculpture installée dans la roseraie du Jardin botanique de Montréal. Cette ronde-bosse de bronze recouverte d’une patine foncée représente une jeune fille au torse nu vêtue d’un foulard et d’une étoffe drapée servant de robe. Ses bras, à demi repliés vers l’avant, tenaient à l’origine entre ses deux mains un collier de perles. Alors que la peau du personnage est relativement texturée, les tissus sont plutôt lisses et traités avec réalisme. Dans cette œuvre, le monde onirique et la banalité se rencontrent dans ce personnage sans émotion apparente, mais absorbé dans ses rêveries. La proposition de Winant exprime ainsi ces évasions qui ponctuent et agrémentent la réalité quotidienne. L’œuvre est exemplaire de la première période de création de l’artiste, celle où des bronzes représentent fréquemment des personnages liés à la famille et souvent féminins, vêtus de grands drapés. Comme pour The First Jewel, ces personnages au visage peu expressif exhalent un sentiment de paix et de plénitude. Biographie : Alice Winant est née en Roumanie en 1928. Elle y pratique la photographie jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit incarcérée en 1944, à Auschwitz et à Bergen-Belsen. Elle obtient sa formation en sculpture auprès de Carl Helbig à Stockholm, à sa libération en 1945. Elle décide par la suite de s’installer au Canada, en 1953, mais ce n’est qu’en 1968, à l’âge de 40 ans, qu’elle entreprend sa pratique sculpturale.
