Description |
English: Title: The village of Urghundee
First Anglo-Afghan War 1838-1842, British Army at Urghundee with 25 guns abandoned by Dost Mohammed. The image depicts the village of Urghundee (Arghandeh), located about 25 miles south from Kabul, and where Emir Dost Mohammed planned to advance against the British invasion force. Before this was possible he was abandoned by many of his chieftains. Left with around 300 followers, he retreated to Bamian (Bamyan). His guns, shown here lined up in the shadow of a mountain, were left behind and captured by Major Cureton of the 16th (The Queen's) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons (Lancers).
