English: Title
Thornhill, Arrowhead Lane, Chesterfield, St. Louis County, MO Other Title Governor Frederick Bates House Contributor Names Historic American Buildings Survey, creator Created / Published Documentation compiled after 1933 Subject Headings - houses - Missouri -- St. Louis County -- Chesterfield Notes - Significance: Although alterations and additions have changed its outer appearance, "Thornhill" today, with its hewn log outbuildings and mortised timber-framed barn, remains one of the most important historical farm houses in Missouri. It was built before 1819, at which time it became the home of Frederick Bates and his bride, one year before Missouri attained statehood. Bates, born in Goochland County Virginia, 1777, served as a distinguished public official first in Detroit, Michigan (territory), 1797 to 1806, and then in Missouri from 1807 to 1825 when he died in office as the state's second Governor. He was buried in the Bates family cemetery, "God's half acre," respectfully preserved as a small plot to the west of the house...The original small-pane (12 over 12) windows have been safely stored in outbuildings along with some of the cabinets and mantels that were removed during modernization. "Thornhill" merits careful restoration; when uncovered, its fabric, hidden behind plaster and siding, should reveal all the remaining evidence that is needed. It is still occupied by the resident farmer on the estate of L.B. Faust. - Survey number: HABS MO-131 - Building/structure dates: 1819 Initial Construction Medium Photo(s): 10 Measured Drawing(s): 4 Data Page(s): 3 Photo Caption Page(s): 1 Call Number/Physical Location HABS MO,95-CHEST,1- Source Collection Historic American Buildings Survey (Library of Congress) Repository Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division Washington, D.C. 20540 USA http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/pp.print Control Number mo0255 Rights Advisory No known restrictions on images made by the U.S. Government; images copied from other sources may be restricted. https://www.loc.gov/rr/print/res/114_habs.html
