Notes | Scholar Charles Hill would write of this painting: "Nocturne, Forest Spires is painted on the thin plywood Thomson used in 1914 and has been dated on the back 1915, with 4 written over the 5. A related work, Nocturne, in the Art Gallery of Windsor is also on plywood and is dated 1914 on the back. Stylistically they relate to no other works from 1914, so I would argue that they date from 1915. We know that Thomson did sketch in Toronto, and Moose at Night is inscribed on the back by Dr. [James] MacCallum, "Winter 1916—at studio," which I understand to mean that it was painted from memory in Toronto."[1] | |||||||||||||||||||||||
