En el s.XII las familias ricas de esta ciudad mostraban su poder mediante la altura de sus torres. La ciudad medieval estaba repleta de estas torres a modo de rascacielos medievales. Varias de estas torres han llegado a nuestros días, siendo la Torre Asinelli y la Torre Garisenda las más famosas de ellas. Las dos torres están inclinadas y se han convertido en el símbolo de esta ciudad. La torre Asinelli es la más alta y mide 97,6 metros. Tiene una inclinación de 1,3 metros y dispone de un mirador en la parte superior. Para llegar a él hay que ascender 498 escalones. La torre Garisenda está más inclinada (3,2 metros) y mide 48 metros de altura. Su inclinación es tal que su altura tuvo que ser recortada en el s.XIV para evitar su derrumbe. Dante Alighieri hace referencia a ella en uno de los cantos del Infierno en la Divina Comedia. |
