| Description |
This torso belonged to a statue of Emperor Hadrian (reign: 117-138 AD) as a general. It was once in the city of Cyrene, in present-day Libya. At chest height, the goddess Victoria moves from left to right. In between, there is a representation of the Palladium, the statue of the Greek goddess Athena who was kept in the temple of Vesta in Rome. According to the Romans, it came from Troy and it is the hero Aeneas, distant ancestor of Romulus, who brought her to Italy. Under the Palladium there is a depiction of the wolf that suckles the twins Romulus and Remus. Such a representation tends to make Hadrian a new Romulus. Marble. 130-140 AD.
