| Description |
Giant old-growth black cherry (Prunus serotina), Columbia County, within the Jakey Hollow Natural Area of Weiser State Forest. The natural area protects a 59-acre tract of old-growth hemlocks, white pines, and northern hardwoods in a deep ravine. In 2007, the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry inventoried the old-growth forests of several natural areas, including Jakey Hollow, for tree species, tree ages and sizes, and other characteristics. The inventory estimated this black cherry (among the largest trees in the tract) to be more than 300 years old. |
