Description |
English: A toy doll in a long, skinny buckskin carrier with beaded detail along the top and on the shoes of the doll. The carrier has a laced closure down the center. The doll's facial features are sewn. Many indigenous cultures in North America used and continue to use cradleboards as a protective carrier for their children. Toy cradleboards, like the one pictured, are important tools in teaching children responsibilities they will hold as adults. This buckskin doll cradleboard belonged to Elizabeth Sager (1837-1925). Sager and her six siblings became orphans along the Oregon Trail and were adopted by Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. Elizabeth along with her four sisters survived the 1847 attack of the mission. Catalog Number: WHMI 210 Object Name: Toy Cradleboard Medium: buckskin, vegetal fiber, wool, glass, cotton Date: circa 1836-1847 Dimensions: cradleboard length 59.7, doll length 34.3, sunshade length 19.0 cm |
