| Description |
The Toyota Crown Comfort is the taxicab of choice in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, taxicabs are color-coded: red for Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, green for New Territories, and blue for Lantau. Cabs are not allowed to pick up rides from outside their designated zones, though they can drop off anywhere in Hong Kong. While there are well over 10,000 taxicabs in Hong Kong, only 50 or so are blue. The side markings say 豊田石油汽的士. 豊田 is the kanji for Toyoda/Toyota, 石油汽 means petroleum gas (Liquid Petroleum Gas is a common automotive fuel in East Asia), and 的士 is phonetic spelling of taxi. In the Chinese-speaking world, Japanese and Korean automotive manufacturers are known by the Chinese character versions of their names, even though the Chinese readings for the characters are different from the native readings, especially in case of Japanese kun-yomi names. (Mandarin speakers would read Toyota's kanji as "fangxian.") |
