A little over a mile from tourist attractions in city center. I rode a Salamanca de Transportes 4 bus: salamancadetransportes.com/lineas ... into town in the morning, but decided to walk back in the afternoon for my return trip to Madrid. Salamanca is ten miles farther from Madrid than San Diego is from Los Angeles. For this route, Renfe offered rides on several slow trains, and a few fast ones. I chose the fast: about an hour and a half each way, past many acres of farmland. Doable as a day trip, although many tourists will bridle at the prospect of three hours total travel time to-and-from. See the logos on the station and the train?
