Description
English: On November 7, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquire a true-color image of a visible image of Tropical Storm Alcide. The image showed an organized storm with a thick band of powerful thunderstorms circling the center. Alcide’s eye appeared ragged and measured about 10 nautical miles wide.

At 10:00 a.m. EST (1500 UTC) on November 7, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) sustained winds close to 86 mph (139 km/h) and was centered near 10.6 degrees south latitude and 55.7 degrees east longitude. That was approximately 587 nautical miles north of Port Louis, Mauritius and was moving to the west-southwest.

By November 9, Tropical Storm Alcide had lost much of its deep convection—rising air that forms the thunderstorms that make up a tropical cyclone—but maintained its spiral banding. Convection was newly flaring over the low level circulation center. At 10:00 EST (1500 UTC) on November 9 the JTWC reported that Alcide’s maximum sustained winds had dropped to 80 mph (129.6 km/h). It was located about 487 nautical miles north-northwest of Port Louis, Mauritius. Because of the storm’s slow movement, it is bringing up cooler waters from below the ocean’s surface, which will reduce sea surface temperatures in in turn will weaken the storm.

The JTWC now expects Alcide to move to the northwest and move just past the tip of Madagascar over the next several days.
