Summary
[edit]DescriptionTropical Storm Ampil (MODIS 2018-07-22).jpg |
English: On July 19, 2018, Tropical Storm Ampil was strengthening as it approached eastern China. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the elongated, large storm on that same day.
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC) on July 18 that Ampil's maximum sustained winds were near 46 mph (74 km/h). Ampil was centered near 20.9 degrees north latitude and 131.1 degrees east longitude, approximately 398 nautical miles south-southeast of Kadena Air Base. By 00:45 UTC July 22 (8:45 a.m. EDT July 21), Tropical Storm Ampil was located about 110 mi east-southeast of Pudong, Shanghai, China and moving to the northwest at 12.4 mph (20 km/h). According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) maximum sustained winds are about 57.5 mph (92.5 km/h) and gusts of about 80.5 mph (130 km/h). Tropical Storm Ampil is forecast to make landfall on the Zhoushan Islands prior to moving to the mainland near Shanghai on the morning of July 22. Xinhua reported that more than 38,000 people in east China’s Zhejiang Province have been relocated at this storm, the tenth typhoon of the year, approaches. More than 28,000 ships, including 22,900 fishing boats were recalled to ports to prepare for the storm. Once on land, Ampil is expected to veer northwestward as it rapidly weakens. It is expected to dissipate over land on July 23. |
