English: On August 18, 2020, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Storm Higos as it crawled towards the coast of China. At the time the image was captured, the leading bands of the storm were interacting with the southeastern coast of China as the cloud-filled center spun to the southwest of the island of Taiwan.
Tropical Storm Higos made landfall approximately 60 miles (96.5 km) west-southwest of Hong Kong in the city of Zhuhai, Guangdong Province early on August 19. Xinhua reports maximum wind speeds of 35 meters per second (78.3 mph) at landfall at 6:00 a.m. local time (August 18 at 2200 UTC/6:00 p.m. EDT). The Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued their last warning for Tropical Storm Higos on August 19 at 0300 UTC (August 18 at 11:00 p.m. EDT), noting that the system rapidly eroded after landfall. At that time, the storm was located about 77 mi (124 km) west-southwest of Hong Kong and carried maximum sustained winds of about 46 mph (74 km/h). Higos is forecast to continue to track further inland and dissipate within 24 hours. |
