Summary
[edit]DescriptionTropical Storm Jongdari off Japan (MODIS 2018-08-01).jpg |
English: Shortly after midnight on July 29, 2018, Typhoon Jongdari made landfall near Ise Bay, Japan, packing maximum sustained winds near 80 mph (129 km/h). Several news outlets reported that the storm left thousands without power and injured 24 people as it passed over the islands of Honshu and Kyushu.
Tropical Depression 15W strengthened into a tropical storm on July 24 at 5:00 p.m. EDT (2100 UTC) and was renamed Jongdari at that time. It strengthened over the next few days, reaching peak strength on July 27 as a Category 2 storm on Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale with winds of 109 mph (176 km/h). It weakened before striking Japan on July 29 and continued to weaken immediately after landfall. According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) advisory published on August 1 at 0300 UTC (11:00 p.m. July 31 EDT), Jongdari carried maximum sustained winds of about 29 mph (47 km/h). The storm was located approximately 226.7 mi (364.8 km) south-southwest of Sasebo, Japan and was tracking westward. Jongdari is predicted to increase in strength before making landfall on eastern China by August 2. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Jongdari on July 28. The elongated storm was approaching landfall on Japan’s main island of Honshu at the time the image was acquired. |
