English: A pair of tropical storms spun up in the Pacific Ocean in early August 2018, threatening coastal Mexico with high winds, rain, and strong surf.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Storms Ileana and John on August 5. Ileana, the most well-organized and compact storm, sits closer to the coast while John is forming to Ileana’s northwest. As of 11:00 p.m. EDT on August 6, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that Tropical Storm Ileana was located approximately at 18.0 north 104.9 west or about 80 mi (130 km) south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. The storm was weakening as it moved northwest roughly parallel to the coast of Mexico. Maximum sustained winds were about 60 mph (95 km/h). In the same report, the NHC advised that Hurricane John carried winds of 75 mph (120 km/h) making it a Category 1 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The storm was located 16.7 north 108.6 west about 320 mi (510 km) southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico and about 435 mi (700 km) south of the southern tip of Baja California. It was moving towards the northwest near 8 mph (13 km/h). Hurricane John is forecast to strengthen over the next 48-72 hours to become a major hurricane. The core of Hurricane John with its strongest winds is forecast to remain well off the Baja California Peninsula, but the NHC warns that any deviation to the east of the predicted track could bring tropical-storm-force winds to portions of the west coast of the Baja Peninsula. Tropical Storm Ileana is expected to continue to weaken, dissipating – or possibly being absorbed by John - within the next 24 hours. |
