In 646 AD, Prefect Gregory declared his independence from the Byzantine Empire and took control over modern Tunisia, using the name, Numidia. He declared himself emperor and made Sbeïtla, or Sufetula, as it was known then, his capital. The Arab Muslims had been closing upon his Christian lands. In 642 AD, Tripoli had been besieged by the Muslims. In 647 AD his troops were defeated, and Gregory was killed. The Arabs left Tunisia alone for more than 20 years, but this marks the beginning of the end of Christian Tunisia. Sbeïtla's history stretches back to Numidian times in the 1st millennium BC. It was a rich city due to the olives grown in this region. Its greatest wealth was achieved in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, most of the impressive buildings that have survived are from this time. |
